Foreign investment in Moldova reaches 414m dollars over 11 years

The Russian Federation continues to hold the leading position as an investor in the authorized capitals of enterprises located on Moldovan territory the last 11 years. Russian investment accounts for about 150.8m dollars and 36 per cent of total foreign investment, according to the data for the end of 2002 presented by Moldovan Department of Statistical and Sociological Analyses.
The largest investment - 145.2m dollars - were made in the energy sector and natural gas supply. At present the Russian gas concern Gazprom is the biggest shareholder (50 per cent plus one share, which is 6,664,540 shares with voting rights) of MoldovaGaz, with the Russian company Itera working in the same field. The Moldovan-Russian Joint Venture Lukoil-Moldova is the leading oil supplier registered in Moldova.
Total foreign investment in the energy sector and gas supply is estimated at 181.6m dollars.
The USA rank second, but fall far behind Russia, with 42.4m dollars (10.2 per cent of the total) invested in Moldova. Comparatively insignificant American investment is mainly directed to the processing industry - 24.3m dollars. American businessmen also invested 2.1m dollars in agriculture, 7.3m dollars in the retail and wholesale trade, 4.9m dollars - in hotels and restaurants.
Spain has also made significant investment - 39.5m dollars, including via the Union Fenosa group, which purchased the power distribution networks (RED) Sud, Centru and Chisinau. The Netherlands invested 31.9m dollars (7.7 per cent), Germany - 19.8m dollars (4.8 per cent), France - 17m dollars (4.1 per cent) and Switzerland - 15.6m dollars (3.8 per cent). Romania invested 5.4m dollars (1.3 per cent) in Moldova, including 1.8m dollars in the retail and wholesale trade, and Ukraine is not included in official statistics.
Overall, in the last 11 years, Moldova attracted foreign investment worth 414m dollars, including 36.8m dollars in 2002.
